American Government/Economics
Course Description
The American Government/Economics course is offered to 12th grade students at the Warren County Career Center. It is taught on a 45 minute class period schedule as a year long course. Students earn 1 social studies credit upon completion. Prerequisites are the required American and World History courses taught in 8th and 10th grades. This is the required American Government course that must be completed by all seniors. The core of the course is the US
Constitution and Bill of Rights. The structure and function of the 3 levels of American Government, and the 3 branches within the levels are the course’s main focus. Also emphasized are comparative world government and economic systems, American political parties, current events, and principles of the market economy. The content standards and benchmarks for 11th and 12th grade Social Studies scope and sequence for the State of Ohio are followed in the course as guidelines.
 
Modern American and World Issues
Course Description
The Modern American and World Issues course is taught on a 45 minute class period schedule at the Warren County Career Center as a year long course. Students earn 1social studies credit upon completion. This can be adapted to a semester course to accommodate students who only wish to earn ½ credit. Prerequisites are the required World and American History courses taught in 8th and 10th grades. This is an elective course that should be offered to students in 11th grade. The core of this course is contemporary American History beginning with the end of the Vietnam War and Watergate to present. These events of recent history impact students’ lives the most as they prepare for American citizenship participation. The sequence of the course is reversed from usual history course, however. The first unit covers current events and flows back through the remainder of the 21st century to the 1990’s, 1980’s, 1970’s, 1960’s, 1950’s, and 1940’s. Emphasis is placed on political movements, leaders, legal issues, foreign affairs, national and international conflicts and their resolutions, and economics. World Geography is also applied to these areas with special attention given to the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Current events are a component of this course through the use of various periodicals.
 
Psychology
Course Description
Basic psychology is designed as a semester course operating in a class period setting with 45 minute daily classes. The class offers one credit toward Ohio graduation within the social studies department. The course employs reading, writing, listening, and discussion techniques to encourage students to work out problems encountered in family, work, and social environments. Psychological theories are put in terms that adolescents can understand, put into immediate use in dealing with problems in their world, and take with them into their adult lives. The course utilizes a textbook, computer research, magazines, audiovisuals, and guest speakers as resources. Problem solving skills and cooperative learning techniques are developed within the content of the course. As the student better understands the psychology of people, he/she will be better prepared for management and any job requiring people skills. Students having a basic grounding in psychology are better able to make informed and reasonable decisions about human relationship problems.
 
American History
Course Description
The American History course is offered to students in the 11th and 12th grade at the Warren County Career Center. It is taught as a required class for graduation in a 45-minute daily class period. Students spend 1 year in the course, and earn 1 social studies credit upon completion. Prerequisites are World History taken by students during grades 9, 10. Recommended electives are a full Economics course, as well as Sociology and Psychology. The class covers the period of time between the Civil War and present day. The content standards and benchmarks for the 11th and 12th grade Social Studies scope and sequence for the State of Ohio are followed in this course as guidelines. These standards were adopted in December 2002. U.S. History examines significant eras of United States history (Reconstruction through present
day) to develop understanding and recognize cause and effect relationships. It examines the
impact of individuals, key events, and stages in society.
 
Global Conflicts
Course Description
This course will examine the major Global Conflicts after World War II, The Cold War, The Korean War, The Bay of Pigs Invasion, The Cuban Missile Crisis, The Vietnam War, The Persian Gulf War and The War in Iraq. The primary focus of the course will be an in-depth study of the similarities and the differences, the causes and the results of these Global Conflicts in World History.
